“Ellen DeGeneres always ends her show, “Be Kind to Another.” My parents like Ellen have instilled this important core value in me since I was a little. However, unlike my parents- some did not teach this valuable lesson to their children.
Throughout middle school and high school people would push me around. People around me would make fun of me in various ways. They thought that due to my kindness, I was an easy target and therefore they can bully me. I always felt like this had held me back, and prevented me to become the person I wanted to be.
At the end of high school, I was faced with some serious health problems. I had complications from reconstructive foot surgery and then later that same year I found out I had an auto-immune disease. Jason Mraz sings in the song The Remedy, “You can turn off the sun but I am still going to shine.” This quote resonated with me then and still today. It showed me that I had to have the power from within to overcome these obstacles that life threw at me.
Since I have been in college, I learned to show the world, that just because I am a kind person it does not mean that someone can push me around, I am not weak. This allowed me to grow to be the person that I want to be, I am proud of the person I am today.”
